Artist Reception at Black Rock!

Over the first 26 weeks of this year I created a new 10x10 inch painting of an animal for each letter of the alphabet. This series is currently on exhibit at the Black Rock Center for the Arts in Germantown, MD along with some other amazing artwork by Fran Abrams, Theresa Esterlund, Susan Feller, Jeannette Herrera, Pilar Jimenez, Gail Peck, and Andrew Zimmermann. And, this Sunday, October 9th, from 1 to 3pm is an Artist Reception. If you have some free time please stop on by! (I'll bring wine.)

If you can't make it on Sunday, the exhibition lasts through November 11th. So, on your way up north to see Artomatic in Frederick (where more of my art is on display in room #63) you can make a pit-stop at Black Rock in Germantown (which is on the way).

And, I also want to promote my last outdoor art festival of the year...

I'm a member of the DC Conspiracy (a collective of comic creators based in the Washington DC area). We work to expand comics readership and fraternity through anthologies, minis, and webcomics, among other things including... Magic Bullet!

Magic Bullet is a our free semi-annually published comic newspaper. You may have seen the first 2 issues at your local comic shop or at other random restaurants and bars around town. Issue #3 is currently in production and I'm the cover artist!

UNICEF Fundraiser for Japan Relief

I was asked by Vanessa Auger to mention an art-themed fundraiser that will take place this Sunday. It's for a good cause (the UNICEF Tap Project and UNICEF’s Japan Relief) so here's the details:

Buy a $40 ticket and they will provide you with an umbrella to paint. (They allow up to 4 artists per umbrella if you want to team up.) The money raised from each umbrella created will provide a child with clean drinking water for 4 years!

I first created this character for a children's book I illustrated and published back in 1992 (when I was still in high school). His official name is "The Good Luck Duck". His adventures include healing a broken fish fin with a magic quack and and helping to get a mermaid's tail unstuck from seaweed tangles. I thought I'd create a new painting of him for my animal alphabet series.

Well, Loteria is the Mexican version of bingo and instead of being played with letters and numbers it’s played with pictures. 54 celbutantes from the DC/Baltimore art world (including yours truly) were asked to create a Loteria image and the games will be played tonight and in between games, the Metro area’s biggest burlesque and vaudeville stars will perform acts based on the Loteria images.

My artwork is featured in two different books both available on Amazon.com

I created the cover art and chapter illustrations for a book by Russ Stevenson titled: The Dating Jungle. This book reveals the secrets to animal magnetism. By discovering your animal personality you'll have the power to make better relationship decisions. See how our personal lives can benefit from the untold secrets of our animal friends.

I also illustrated one of the comics in the first graphic anthology of Native American folklore titled: Trickster. All cultures have tales of the trickster — a crafty creature or being who uses cunning to get food, steal precious possessions, or simply cause mischief. He disrupts the order of things, often humiliating others and sometimes himself. In Native American traditions, the trickster takes many forms, from coyote or rabbit to raccoon or raven, and I am proud to have my illustrations included in this entertaining collection of stories.
